START WITH PHYSICAL THERAPY FOR TMJ RELIEF

Should you see a dentist or a physical therapist for TMJ?
If you searched for a TMJ specialist, you were probably expecting a dentist. Here is the honest difference. A dentist works on your bite, your teeth, and appliances like night guards. A physical therapist works on the joint itself and the muscles around it, which means the jaw, the neck, and the way you hold your head and shoulders.
Physical therapy is a reasonable place to start if your jaw clicks, catches, or aches, if it is hard to chew or open your mouth wide, or if you are getting headaches that start near your ears or temples.
If we think you also need to see a dentist, we will tell you.
What We Help With
TMJ and Jaw Pain, Symptom by Symptom
Every jaw is a little different, but these are the symptoms we see most often in our Naperville and Wheaton clinics. If what you are feeling is not listed here, call us anyway, we can likely still help.
Jaw Pain and Soreness
Pain at the joint, or muscles that ache from clenching.
Clicking and Locking
A jaw that pops, catches, or will not open fully.
TMJ-Related Headaches
Headaches that start near the ears, temples, or base of the skull.
Clenching and Grinding
The muscle tension that comes with it, and what to do about it.
Neck and Posture
Often part of the picture, and often part of the fix.
Care that fits around your day
Why Choose Albatross for TMJ Physical Therapy?
You’ll get one-on-one care in a private room with the same therapist every visit, with no handoffs to assistants. No referral is needed thanks to Illinois Direct Access, evening appointments are available until 7:00 pm on most weekdays and we are even open on Saturdays. Treatment is hands-on and personalized, focusing on manual therapy rather than a printed exercise sheet and a machine.

RELIEVE JAW PAIN AND RESTORE FUNCTION
What TMJ physical therapy looks like here
Your first visit is an evaluation. We look at how your jaw moves, where it catches, and what your neck and posture are doing, because the jaw is rarely working alone.
From there, treatment is hands-on. That usually means manual therapy on the jaw and the muscles around it, work on your neck and upper back, and specific exercises you can do at home between visits.

- Hands-on care and manual therapy
- Customized exercise programs you can do at home
- Evening appointments until 7pm on most weekdays and Saturday until 1pm
- One therapist, one private room every visit
WE WORK WITH INSURANCE
Most insurance accepted
We accept most major plans and we check your benefits before your first visit, so you know what you are walking into. Call and we will look yours up.
What to Expect
- REACH OUT. Call us or leave your number and we will call you back.
- GET EVALUATED. A licensed therapist checks your jaw, neck, and posture and goes through your insurance.
- START YOUR TREATMENT PLAN. You leave with a clear plan and exercises you can do at home.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a referral from a physical therapist?
No. Illinois Direct Access lets you start physical therapy without one. Some insurance plans still ask for a referral, so call us and we will check yours before your first visit.
Is this dental treatment?
No. We are physical therapists. We treat the joint and the muscles around it, not your teeth or your bite. If you need a dentist as well, we will say so.
What happens at the first visit?
An evaluation. We look at how your jaw moves, check your neck and posture, and talk through what has been bothering you. You leave with a plan and usually some exercises to start on.
How soon can I be seen?
